Is English your native language? If the answer is yes, then the likelihood is that it is also the only language you speak. English speakers are notoriously lazy and we expect English to be spoken wherever we go in the world.
Usually it is, so there is no problem. But the Government believes a lack of linguistic skills can seriously disadvantage those looking to work on international projects, or as part of multi-national teams.
In an effort to improve the linguistic skills of engineers, the ECUK (Engineering Council UK) and training organisation SEMTA have become involved with a Government-funded project that it is hoped will lead to more engineers being able to converse in something other than their mother tongue. The project is being co-ordinated by CiLT, the National Centre for Languages, and involves four universities: Loughborough, Bristol, Kingston and Salford.
Language and intercultural skills models will be developed for inclusion within the engineering curriculum degree courses. Its inclusion in the degree course differs from language courses already offered to engineering students which few take.
The models will be developed jointly by the universities’ language schools and engineering faculties. The project is due to be completed in March 2008.
