Electronic Design Engineers can specialise in many fields, including hardware design, software design, analogue and digital electronics design. Often, the engineer will be involved from the conception and design through to manufacture.

Electronics Design Engineer Job Description

Typically, responsibilities of the electronics design engineer may include the following:

  • Design and test of electronics designs to ensure product requirements are met
  • Assist with Software design - analysis, design, implementation and testing
  • Product specifications - participating in preparing all specifications relating to a given product and make recommendations for new designs
  • High speed digital design
  • Design electronic function of new products
  • Qualify prototypes
  • Digital Signal Processing

Electronics Design Engineer Qualifications/Experience

As with most Engineering positions, an engineering degree will be essential.

There are also college foundation courses such as HNC, HND or BTEC in Electronics. Apprenticeships are another way into the industry, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk to find out more.

Universities with Engineering / Electrical Engineering Schools / Departments.

Experience of the design of digital and analogue systems, the implementation of FPGA designs and a familiarity with embedded software languages such as C++ are also considered essential.
