The power sensitive Philips 42PFL5603D Eco TV has scooped the Best in Show award at CES 2008. Majoring on power-saving features, the eco-friendly Eco TV is a 42-inch, 1080p resolution, flat-panel LCD.
The "Best of CES" Award Winners were announced yesterday evening at the major electronics trade show in Las Vegas.
According to Philips, features such as dimming the backlight in darker scenes have a dual benefit - not only is power consumption reduced but the black-level performance is improved. Also, there is a room lighting sensor, which can also dim the backlight in darker rooms...
The Philips Eco TV is due for release in March (with a suggested retail price of $1,399 in the States).
A People's Voice award went to Motorola for its Rokr E8 mobile phone. It is Motorola's response to the iPhone and its touch interface - the Rokr E8 highlighted touch-pad controls change depending on how the unit is used.
Ten companies were also recognized for having the best products in their respective categories. The full list is:

Azentek Atlas CPC-1200 (an "in-dash PC" powered by an Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz CPU with 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, and a DVD-ROM/CDRW drive, providing GPS navigation, Bluetooth support, and media management)

Motorola Rokr E8 (featuring "ModeShift" technology, Motorola's response to the iPhone touch interface, where the highlighted touch-pad controls change depending on how the unit is used)

Lenovo IdeaPad U110 (entertainment-oriented Lenovo IdeaPad laptops, with 17-in screen, support for Blu-ray and a 500GB hard drive)
4. Digital Photo and Video
Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 (new entry-level model for the digital SLR market, with a 10-megapixelSuper HAD CCD, and a 230,000-pixel 2.7-inch LCD)
5. Emerging Technologies
Bug Labs Platform (described as "the Lego of gadgets" it allows you to plug together units such as multiple modules, such as a digital camera or LCD screen)
6. Gaming
Nyko Wireless Nunchuk (removes the cable for the Wii Nunchuck, a stick peripheral that plugs into the base of the Wii remote via a long cable)
7. Home Audio
Logitech Squeezebox Duet (a network digital audio streamer featuring a handheld remote with a colour screen)
8. Home Video
EchoStar TR-50 (records over-the-air HD digital, standard digital, and analog TV channels, with full control over live broadcasts)
9. MP3 and Portable Video Players
iRiver W7 (an MP3 player with GPS capabilities)
