Motorola will show its first 3G
femtocell customer premises equipment (CPE) at Mobile World
Congress 2008 next week.
The 8000 series
Motorola Femtocell
Access Point is a standalone Femtocell with an Ethernet bridge
which will be used for connecting to a standard home broadband
modem or an existing Wi-Fi gateway. It will be commercially
available in the second half of 2008,
“We now have three trials taking place and our portfolio boasts a
true integrated end-to-end solution,” said Alan Lefkof, corporate
v-p at Motorola Broadband Solutions Group.
Femtocells should allow operators to more cost-effectively provide
wireless voice and real-time data services to customers inside
their homes.
Potentially, this means for the user that they will be able to roam
with their 3G handsets from outside to their home networks which
will offer lower cost calls.
Motorola is one of the members of the
Femto Forum, the independent industry association that is
promoting the deployment of femtocell technology worldwide.
Netgear is another supplier demonstrating its femtocells at Mobile
World Congress. It will be working with fellow US supplier Kineto
Wireless to demonstrate interoperability between Netgear’s
Femtocell Voice Gateway (DVG834GH) and Kineto Wireless’ UMA Network
Controller (UNC), a 3GPP standards-based femtocell RAN
Gateway.
Netgear is also working with Nokia Siemens Networks to certify the
Femtocell Voice Gateway for interoperability with Nokia Siemens
Networks own Femto Gateway.
