DoCoMo makes WiMAX move in Japan

NTT DoCoMo has been forced to partner with another firm, Acca Networks, to allow it to apply for the 2.5GHz spectrum which is due to be licensed for mobile WiMAX use in Japan.

This follows the Japanese ministry’s decision that it would not allow existing 3G network operators to gain licences directly in order to encourage new market entrants.

NTT will help construct the wireless access network and provide technical assistance in the firm, to be called Acca Wireless, while Acca will manage the network. NTT’s stake will be limited to one-third.
