Intel sells RFID operation to Impinj
The deal will see Impinj add to its existing UHF RFID portfolio of tag chips and fixed-reader products with Intel's R1000 RFID reader chip technology. ABI Research calls the deal a "game-changing move."

Georgia Tech focuses Cell BE work on sensor networks, bioinformatics
The Georgia Tech College of Computing will continue its work on the Cell Broadband Engine, developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba, as it yesterday announced several future projects and a two-day processor workshop focused on the Cell architecture.

Siemens wants to cut 16,700 jobs
Siemens says it wants to axe 16,750 jobs from its 400,000 workforce. It says it will cut 6,350 jobs from its industrial division, 2,800 jobs at its healthcare business and 3,950 jobs at its energy business. 12,600 of the jobs to be cut are in administration. It is hoped the cuts will save Euros 1.2bn in 2010.
Mobile phone shipments better than expected - analysts
With anecdotal evidence pointing to a slowdown in mobile phone chip shipments, market researchers at Forward Concepts said in a report that the May shipments reported by WSTS (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics) say this is not so.

SanDisk to license 3D flash technology to Toshiba
SanDisk is to license 3D flash technology to Toshiba, however neither company is saying when they reckon it will be manufacturable in a re-writeable form.
Claasen retires from NXP
NXP Semiconductors has announced that Theo Claasen, executive vice president responsible for business development, will retire from the company with effect from 1 August.
