|NewsletterAs IFA 08 opens the doors on Europe's biggest consumer show, Broadcom is the latest chip company to join the WirelessHD consortium which is driving the technology standards for wireless streaming of high definition (HD) content between consumer electronics devices and displays.
The WirelessHD group already includes heavyweights Intel, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony.
According to Dan Marotta, senior v-p & general manager of Broadcom's broadband communications group, this is only wireless digital interface that combines true uncompressed high definition video, multi-channel audio, intelligent format and control data with Hollywood approved content protection.
"We look forward to working with the WirelessHD consortium to achieve the mutual goal of providing consumers with a quick, simple and secure way to connect and transmit HD content among a wide range of digital devices," said Marotta, speaking at the IFA Show in Berlin this week.
Technically, the WirelessHD standard provides a high-speed wireless digital interface to transmit HD content in a secure manner at speeds as high as 4Gbit/s.
The WirelessHD group has recently published an extension to the Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) specification for the use of WirelessHD.
First products are expected to be new generation HDTVs as well as fixed location and portable audio/video (A/V) devices.
