|NewsletterArchos, the French portable media player company, claims to have developed one of the first implementations of the ARM Cortex superscalar microprocessor running under Linux in its latest product, an Internet Media Table.
This is seen as an early entry by an ARM-based device into the mobile Internet device (MID) market which is likely to be the main target for Intel's Atom processor later this year.
ARM is going head-to-head with Intel in the ultra-mobile PC space, dubbed MIDs or mobile internet devices. Qualcomm, Texas Instruments (TI) and Nvidia are bringing out chip-sets using ARM which will run both Smartphones and MIDs.
"The MIDS market is a natural extension of the smartphone market, and already there's more Internet connectivity with smartphones than with laptops", Ian Drew, vice president of marketing at ARM, told Electronics Weekly.
The new portable Archos tablets will be used to view Internet services and mobile TV on 5in or 7in touch screens with a 800x480 resolution.
According to Henry Crohas, founder and CEO of Archos, the Internet media tablet is "a real 100% Internet multimedia platform using a WiFi and/or 3.5G HSDPA connection. The customer now has permanent connection to the Internet in a handheld device as they would have on their PC.
Reports suggest that the the Internet media terminals could also be an early implementation of the Texas Instruments OMAP3530 mobile applications processor, which provides the video accelleration.
There is Adobe Flash 9 video support, which will be good news for Youtube browsers.
This is a 3.5G device and HSDPA network connection is provided via a USB dongle.
Established in 1988, Archos also has offices in the US and Asia as well as the UK and France.
