Power Integrations LED streetlight design is 92% efficient

Wednesday 24 June 2009 10:27

Power Integrations has released an 92% efficient LED streetlight power supply reference design. For streetlights up to 150W, the supply has a fixed output voltage of 48V at up to 3.125A.

Central to the circuit is the firm's HiperPLC chip, aimed at converters between 80 and 600W, which combines power factor correction (PFC) and a resonant (LLC, inductor inductor capacitor) down converter on the same die.

"The IC provides up to 0.99 power factor and features synchronisation of PFC and LLC controllers," said the firm. "Synchronisation reduces the ripple in the bulk capacitors, which reduces capacitor operating temperature and significantly extends the life of the power supply."

The paperwork includes detailed instructions for constructing the crucial transformer. For more information see www.powerint.com/applications/led-lighting
