Sharp prototypes five-colour LCD

Sharp has prototyped a five-colour LCD, making an RGB-cyan-yellow display to more faithfully represent the surface colours.

"With a standard sRGB scheme for computer and monitor display devices only 35 to 60% of all real surface colours can be reproduced," said Sharp. "The red green blue cyan yellow combination enables the new display to reproduce more than 99% of real surface colours."

The firm claims surfaces that are difficult to render with just RGB, and can be rendered with RGBCY, include: the sea (emerald blue), brass instruments (golden yellow), and roses (crimson red).

"In the future, Sharp will be working to further improve the basic performance of this display and making efforts toward its practical application," said Sharp. "At first prototype has been on display this summer. However, when the new five-primary-colour scheme will be seen in the first products is not yet determined."
