MIPS joins Open Handset Alliance in Android push

MIPS Technologies plans to use Google's Android operating system as a basis of its processor platforms stepped up a gear with the microprocessor developer joining the Open Handset Alliance, developer of the Android Linux-based operating system. 

MIPS Technologies is already contributing to Android development most notably in its decision to make publicly available its source code optimised for the MIPS processor architecture.

MIPS has said it will now contribute the Android on MIPS code to the Android Open Source Project.

“This complements the work we have already been doing with Android, and offers our customers even more options for next-generation devices,” said Art Swift, v-p of marketing, MIPS Technologies.
