Mobile phone shipments grew 13% year-on-year in Q2, said researcher Strategy Analytics.
Fastest growing brands were RIM and Samsung.
While Apple’s iPhone shipments increased 61% in Q2.
“Global mobile handset shipments reached 308 million units during Q2 2010, rising from 273 million in Q2 2009,” said Bonny Joy, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics.
The 13% growth figure was lower than the 17% average over the previous two quarters. “But it is still well above the -8% annual rate recorded in the recession of Q2 2009,” said Joy.
According to Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, despite slower growth in the handset market there are ”no credible signs yet of any major double-dip downturn in the handset industry, but that could of course change quickly if overall economic conditions were to deteriorate again across the major markets of North America, Western Europe and Asia in the coming months.”
RIM and Samsung outgrew their major top five rivals, due to the demand for QWERTY phones and touchphones.
Samsung captured 21% global share, while RIM maintained fourth position with 4% share.
Apple shipped 8.4 million iPhones worldwide in Q2 2010, up 61% from 5.2 million units in Q2 2009.
Its marketshare has increased from 2% in Q2 2009 to almost 3% in Q2 2010.
