Google’s growing interest in the mobile phone market, which centres around the Android OS and this month’s Nexus One phone launch, is likely to accelerate the
introduction of new multimedia features including 3D imaging.
According to Sean Mitchell, CEO of Movidius, the launch of Google’s Nexus One mobile phone earlier this month is likely to force mobile phone firms to rethink the multimedia features they should design into their handsets.
“Nexus One has definitely put the cat amongst the pidgeons,” said Mitchell. “Handset firms are assessing the impact this will have on the need to differentiate their designs.”
An example of this is the level of video support in the handset.

“Handset manufacturers and network operators are keen to add features such as video editing and now 3D imaging to the next generation of mobile phones,” said Mitchell.
Movidius has added interface support for Android on its 20GFLOPS mobile phone media processor based on eight cores, which has the horsepower to run video and photo processing to compensate for sub-optimal handset optics.
