Cambridge-based Ethernet developer Level 5 Networks has merged with US firm Solarflare Communications, which makes mixed signal chips for 10Gigabit Ethernet.
The incorporated company, which has a total of $50m backing, will be called Solarflare Communications and headquartered in Irvine, California with engineering in Sunnyvale and Cambridge.
The idea is to combine the Level 5 network interface card and controller technology with Solarflare’s 10Gbase-T chips, to enable 10Gbit/s networks that can handle computing, storage and networking through standard Ethernet infrastructure.
“Our combined products are highly compelling and satisfy end users’ needs for easy-to-use, standards-based, high-performance Ethernet solutions,” said Russell Stern, Solarflare’s president and CEO.
Level 5 Networks was founded in July 2002 by Steve Pope and Derek Roberts, both University of Cambridge PhDs and ex-members of the CLAN high-performance networking project at AT&T Laboratories Cambridge.
