Samsung Electronics says it has developed the first 70-inch LCD panel which will sell in the consumer TV market.

The firm said it was going head-to-head with PDP (plasma display panel) and projection TV makers in the high definition TV market with its large scale LCDs. The largest LCD TV screen size currently being sold is 65 inches in diameter.

Samsung’s latest LCD panel, which will be seen used in an HDTV this week at the International Meeting on Information Displays exhibition, as high definition TV resolution of  1080 pixels and a conical viewing angle of 180 degrees.

Interestingly, its video signal is reproduced at 120Hz, compared to a video signal of 60Hz for a conventional full HD LCD panel. According to the firm, this allows for moving video images to be reproduced more clearly.

Samsung said it will begin producing the 70-inch LCD during the first half of 2007.
