Once again, electronics firms feature highly in the Queen's Awards.

Cambridge-based smart metering specialist Sentec has been given an award for enterprise in recognition of its growth over the last three years, during which the company more than trebled its overseas earnings to £4.3m.

Sentec technology is now included in over five million - around half - of the smart electricity meters installed in the USA.

"Sentec's exporting success has been key to the business for many years," said Sentec financial director Adrian Towers. "It has the advantage that we are able continue to invest in our own research and development without having to wait for external funding, even in a difficult economic climate such as we see at the moment."

The firm just announced an agreement to licence its Mobius current sensor to National Grid subsidiary OnStream for the UK smart electric meter market.

Oxfordshire's Navtech Radar has also got an Enterprise award, based on its millimetre radar-based sensors which are used for security surveillance, industrial automation and traffic sensing.

"We are delighted to receive this award as recognition of the excellent work that has been put in over recent years. The Queen's Award is very highly recognised outside the UK and this will certainly help us to raise the awareness of our solutions both nationally and abroad," said Navtech co-founder and MD Philip Avery. "Radar is a fast growing emerging technology for outdoor sensing particularly in security & surveillance and Traffic applications."

"Innovations by the small company include a precision timing system to improve range accuracy, a novel radar beam pattern to improve coverage and detection in surveillance applications, and robust system electronics to ensure reliable and accurate operation in the harshest of environmental conditions," reads Navtech's citation.
