Cree aims LED at 50W halogen replacement

Cree is aiming to replace 35-50W halogen MR16 bulbs with its multi-die MT-G LED.

"To date, there are no energy-efficient alternatives for many high-lumen, small form-factor, directional lighting applications. Until now, LED-based MR16 lamps have been a tremendous challenge for the lighting design community in terms of both light output and colour consistency due to their small size and limited capacity for thermal management," said Cree marketing director Paul Thieken. "Cree developed this LED from the ground-up with applications like these in mind."

There is a free 12Vac MR16 lamp reference design to go with the device, designed with driver (Diodes, National Semiconductor and Texas Instruments), thermal (Neng Tyi Precision Industries) and optic (Carclo, Ledil) partners.

Cree is also expecting to see the LED in accent, track, display and down lighting used in retail stores, residential settings, museums, art galleries, hospitality and landscapes.

"These are the first commercial LEDs to deliver sufficient light output for these applications," claimed the firm.

The 9x9mm LED is binned and tested at a realistic 85°C.

Minimum colour rendering index (CRI) is 80 for the 3,000K (warm) white variants where to top bin delivers up 1525 lm at 4A

The brightest, coolest (4,000K) bin delivers up to 560 lm at 1.1A.

These are for Cree's wide 'F' (4-step MacAdam ellipse chromaticity regions), there are also tighter 'H' 2-step regions for those requiring closer colour match.

Samples, not necessarily high bin samples, are available immediately and production volumes are available with standard lead times.
