STMicroelectronics and Intel have hit upon the moniker Numonyx for the pending independent semiconductor company, which was announced back in May. Numonyx...mnemonics...aiding memory, geddit?
The two electronics giants have merged their flash memory businesses into the new company, which will have anticipated annual revenues of $3.6bn. It will focus on supplying non-volatile memory for consumer and industrial devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and computers.
"We want the industry to see that we are already hard at work to create a significant, agile and energetic new company and what better way to convey that than to give it a name," said Intel's Brian Harrison, CEO-designate for Numonyx. "We are proceeding to our original timeframes and will be excited when we can officially launch the new company to our customers later this year."
"While we are progressing in achieving regulatory approvals, planting the Numonyx flag establishes an important milestone for the company," added ST's Mario Licciardello, COO-designate for Numonyx."
