Linear Technology has announced a synchronous buck-boost converter that will convert any voltage between 2.7 and 40V to any voltage over the same range.

Outputs up to 2A are available.

Called LTC3115-1, the device includes the four necessary power mosfets, and can be programmed to operate anywhere from 100kHz to 2MHz.

"Proprietary third-generation buck-boost PWM circuitry ensures low noise and high efficiency while minimising the size of external components," claimed the firm. "There is a continuous, jitter-free transition between buck and boost modes."

Frequency compensation can be applied externally - a Linear Tech speciality - and the firm has included in the data sheet an extensive section on high-performance compensation schemes that is worth a read in its own right.

Schemes from one capacitor to five passives are discussed.

Burst-mode cuts quiescent current to 50µA at light load, and this can be disabled to keep noise low.

Shutdown current is 3µA, and efficiency peaks at 95%.

Additional features include internal soft-start, programmable under voltage protection, short circuit protection and output disconnect.

There are two packages: a 16-lead 4x5mm DFN, and a thermally-enhanced 20 lead TSSOP.
