Comau Robotics, a manufacturer of industrial robots, is running Wind River’s VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) for its latest generation robot control unit.
The C5G is Comau Robotics’ fifth-generation control unit and it uses the RTOS to run peripherals control software, application software and real-time functions on a multi-core processing system.
It can simultaneously manage several robots, running a variety of advanced motion algorithms.
“After looking at other RTOSs, we turned to Wind River because VxWorks delivered the levels of performance, reliability, safety, and security required for our next-generation Robot Control Unit,” said Luca Lachello, software engineering manager at Comau.
For the last 12 months Wind River been working with embedded board suppliers to provide complete development platforms running it VxWorks real-time operating system and/or Wind River Linux.
This work resulted in embedded development kits from Emerson Network Power, Eurotech and Kontron.
There were also platforms from Advantech, Adlink, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, GE Intelligent Platforms and RadiSys will be available in Q4.
Each development kit includes a bootable USB flash drive each board will have loaded a pre-flashed 30-day run-time trial version of Wind River’s VxWorks real-time operating system and/or Wind River Linux.
