Southern Electronics looks at green issues

The Southern Electronics and Manufacturing Exhibition’s programme of free seminars have a strong focus on environmental legislation this year.

The issue is so important that the seminar ‘Developments in RoHS legislation worldwide, focusing in particular on China’, by Dr Paul Goodman and Chris Robertson from ERA Technology, is being run twice.

“European Union RoHS has acted as the primary catalyst for the development of similar legislation across the world,” says Robertson. “The objective of our talks is to cover the latest news on this with some critical insights too.”
ERA will look at the requirements of China RoHS, recent developments on EU RoHS and developments worldwide, including California, South Korea and Japan.

In ‘RoHS compliance testing – a low cost route’, Tom Perrett of Soldertec will focus on the testing requirements, as published by the enforcement authorities including the UK’s NWML.

“I will look at how each of the restricted materials can be detected and their part-per-million level verified,” says Perrett, who will also take a look at China RoHS and how it will impact on testing requirements.

Open forum debates will cover legislation updates on ‘WEEE, RoHS, EMC Directives’ and ‘WEEE, RoHS, EUP and component market’, all from a subcontractor’s perspective.

Other topics include: obsolescence management; PCB manufacture – designing with RF and EMC in mind; design for reliability – analysis techniques, failure patterns and product improvement identification; designing and manufacturing for recyclability; Lean/Six Sigma; CE marking; rapid manufacturing in the future; international supply chains; lean tools and techniques; procuring or manufacturing abroad, the pros and cons; and succeeding at new product development.

The show also offers the chance to see the latest technology, components, materials, products and services available in the South of England. And technical staff are on hand to offer specialist advice on manufacturing processes, component sourcing, materials selection and overall business efficiency.

The Southern Electronics show takes place on 7-8 February 2007 at Thorpe Park, Surrey.
