Processor firm ZiiLabs has selected the Wolfson Microelectronics WM8350 stereo codec for its Zii EGG StemCell Computer, a handheld terminal design platform.

ZiiLabs, which is a subsidiary of Creative Technology, the EGG StemCell Computer platform last month which is intended to support the design of handheld multimedia terminals such as smartphones running Android or the firm's Linux-based Plaszma OS.

One attraction of the Wolfson codec is its integrated power management function.

"Wolfson has provided excellent application support throughout the project, something that has been an essential component in our decision to work with them," said Tim Lewis, marketing director at ZiiLabs.

"The WM8350 and ZMS-05 processor form a powerful combination that will help designers differentiate their products with media-rich applications at the lowest possible power consumption," said Lewis.

The StemCell computer platform is based on the ZiiLabs ZMS-05 applications processor, which supports a multi-touch 3.5-inch LCD screen and will output HD video at up to 1080p.

It has 24 floating-point processors that deliver up to 8 GFLOPS of processing power.

"This feature-packed Zii EGG comes with a take-no-prisoner price from as low as US$199," said Sim Wong Hoo, chairman and CEO of Creative Technology.
