Nujira has received a strategic investment from Mitsubishi UFJ Capital of Japan.
Significantly this is Cambridge-based Nujira’s first venture investment relationship with a Japanese corporation and comes as three major Japanese OEMs are designing its RF power management technology into production systems.
This announcement brings the total number of companies designing in Nujira Coolteq modules to five including Sumitomo Electrical Industries which was announced in 2008.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Mitsubishi UFJ Capital as a shareholder and anticipate that this will help even further to cement our already excellent position within the Japanese market place,” said Tim Haynes, Nujira CEO.
“Nujira’s approach has been endorsed by an impressive portfolio of network systems OEMs with particular success in Japan. This investment represents an outstanding opportunity to participate in a business with excellent prospects,” said Masahito Kawashima, Managing Director from Mitsubishi UFJ Capital.
Nujira’s technology, which is designed into the Coolteq module, can improve the power efficiency of mobile basestations by modulating the power supply to the RF power amplifier as the transmission requirements of the radio channels change.
The firm has 48 patents granted or in process for its technology which is a form of envelope tracking, with modulators for wideband CDMA, CDMA2000 or Wimax basestations.
Originally targeting the basestation design, a year ago the company developed a version of the RF tracking technology which would operate at the higher power levels seen in digital TV transmitters.
It has also recently a lower power version of the technology which can be designed into to handsets as semiconductor IP.
“The accelerating rate of adoption of Coolteq modules is a reflection of the fact that we have a proven technology that directly addresses the key concerns of the cellular network operators today,” said Haynes.
The company is in growth phase and recruiting engineers for its facilities in Cambridge and Bath.
