First passive matrix OLED for mobiles uses Dialog drivers

Dialog Semiconductor is supplying the display driver ICs for TDK’s first demonstration of its passive matrix OLED video display which is expected to be used in mobile phones.

The 3 inch W-QVGA panel will be demonstrated at the FPD International exhibition in Yokohama, Japan this week.

Passive matrix OLEDs can be cheaper to manufacture than active matrix OLED displays which would make them attractive as mobile phone displays.

“We are delighted that TDK will demonstrate W-QVGA panels using Dialog's first SmartXtend-based driver IC at the FPD show,” said Manoj Thanigasalam, v-p and general manager of Dialog's displays system business unit.

Volume production for passive matrix OLED displays is expected to be in the second half of next year.

The driver technology is designed to allow the main displays of mobile devices with W-QVGA and QVGA resolution to use passive matrix OLED displays rather than LCD or active matrix OLEDs.

The drivers implement a multi-line addressing scheme with accurate dynamic current matching. As a result they can reduce the peak current greater than 30% and power consumption by as much as 50% compared to the conventional passive matrix driving schemes.
