Kemet is building ceramic capacitors into metallised polyester film capacitors to allow both low and high frequency filtering, claiming it to be a first.
They have been dubbed the F5D Series.
"F5D combines a self-healing film capacitor, capable of withstanding high voltage peaks for low frequency filtering, and a multilayer ceramic capacitor of low capacitance for high frequency filtering," said Kemet R&D engineer Franz Wurmser. "Automotive motor applications such as windshield wipers, cooling fans and seat positioning can all benefit from this single component."
The single device can eliminate the need for a filter PCB, added CTO Dr Philip Lessner.
The capacitors are AEC-Q200 and ISO 7637-2, rated between 63 and 100V, and offer 100nF to 2.2µF for the film capacitor and 10pF to 100nF for the parallel ceramic capacitor.
Temperature range is -55 to 125°C.
