Claiming it to be the world’s brightest
LED, Osram is to introduce a 250 lm surface mount device early in 2008.
“Extremely low thermal resistance coupled with low cooling requirements makes the Diamond Dragon ideal for use in recessed lights,” said the firm. “Thanks to their small size they can be used instead of conventional halogen lamps for unobtrusive lighting.”
250 lm comes at 1.4A (2A max) from a 2mm sq. die and the devices will be available in whites ranging from 2700K through 6500K, suitable for indoor and outdoor lighting, as well as all monochromatic colours.
Thermal resistance is 2.5K/W and the maximum junction is 175°C. “This makes the LED extremely robust and allows solutions where the LED cannot be ideally cooled, for example in small spotlights, retrofit applications and recessed ceiling luminaires,” said
Osram.
The silicon lens can be handled using standard SMT processes without any changes. Power rating of the Diamond Dragon is 5 to 8W, sitting between the existing 1 to 3W Platinum Dragons and the multi-die 10W Ostar devices.
Lifetime is predicted to be more than 50,000 hours.
