TI upgrades OMAP35x with 720MHz ARM Cortex-A8

Texas Instruments has increased the speed specification for its OMAP3530 applications processor.

The processor's ARM Cortex-A8 core now runs at 720MHz and the TMS320C64x+ DSP at 520MHz.

The earlier verison of the applications processor included a superscalar 600MHz Cortex-A8. 

The processing performance will benefit the audio and video applications at which the OMAP3530 is aimed. It will also support faster boot times single board computing designs.

The faster Cortex-A8 core provides 1400 Dhrystone MIPS.

As previously there  is also an on-chip PowerVR SGX 3D graphics accelerator.

One of the target markets for the processor is medical terminals.

The associated OMAP3530 evaluation board can be used to run Windows Embedded CE and Linux operating systems.

It also has a TVP5146 analogue-to-digital video decoder.
