Cambridge-based Arcom has joined the ZigBee Alliance, the international group of more than 150 firms promoting the low cost wireless networks as an open standard.
The embedded systems technology firm said the move was to support its development of industrial wireless gateways.
Arcom said it has already produced a number of industrial gateways using several network standards, including private spread-spectrum networks, GPRS networks and satellite technology.
Glen Middleton, managing director of Arcom, said: “As a participant member, we look forward to contributing to the activities of the Gateway Working Group within the Alliance.”
The firm is now developing an IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee radio product using Chipcon’s CS2420 device for low power mesh networking applications. The product will use the ARM/Intel XScale processor.
ZigBee is a low power low cost, wireless mesh networking technology designed for monitoring and control applications in industry and home automation. The standard looks likely to succeed in its target markets, unlike many of its predecessors.
As an example of ZigBee's potential, Chipcon recently announced it has shipped over a million of its CS2420 devices.
