A Californian company claims to have the first wireless SD memory card for digital cameras which supports wireless download of pictures to a PC.

The two year old company called Eye-Fi has effectively created an 802.11g card for digital cameras.

“Digital cameras have made it extremely easy to take pictures, but the rest of the [transfer] process is a hassle,” said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi.

According to the company, the wireless card works with existing SD-compatible digital cameras and stores photos like a conventional SD memory card.

The company anticipates that the wireless card will be used to upload photographs to Internet-based photo sharing sites.

It offers a free upload service allows users to transfer an unlimited number of photos.

On sale in the US at $99.99, the card has 2Gbyte of storage. It is not yet available in Europe.
