Seasons Craft Brewery, Port Alegre, Brazil

Seasons Craft Brewery

R. Angelo Dourado, 185

Anchieta

Porto Alegre

http://www.cervejariaseasons.com.br

This is another find by Alan Hutton who has an amazing talent for locating good beer in exotic places.

Alan writes:

"The Seasons Craft Brewery can be found in the neighbourhood of Anchieta, Port Alegre in Brazil. The brewery was just recently established in 2010 with the aim to not only create original beers but also spread a new beer culture in Brazil by way of joint projects with a community of home brewers to essentially "start a revolution and drink better craft beer" which is their motto today."

"Today, they have three signature beers on tap; namely, the "Green Cow" which was their first American IPA is very bitter, tastes full of hops and get's it's name from "cows that are very important to the manufacturing process since the crushed malt (organic waste) is a favorite food of cows" as quoted by Seasons Craft. The "Funhouse" is a Belgian blond beer and get's it's name from circuses and amusement parks where you amuse and amaze visitors !"

"The one I tried," continues Alan, "had hints of orange and coriander so it's was certainly fun but had a rather strange after taste which could either be attributed to the fruit and veg ingredients or the type of yeast used which comes from Belgian Trappist monks. Lastly, the "Cirilo" looks just like a Guinness but is classed as a coffee stout and they are very much on the mark with this one since the predominant flavor and aroma is just coffee with a typical bitterness and only balanced with the essence of vanilla and herbal flavours on the back of American "alpha" hops and roasted barley. As they say, the perfect excuse to replace coffee in the morning."

"They have a number of other lesser drunk beers such as the Wallace Amber, the BigFoot Russian Imperial Stout and the Harvest Ale all of which I never tried but are allegedly very good too."

"Overall, an interesting little start-up microbrewery with ambitious plans to expand their range over the next few years," says Alan, "maybe we can expect to see the Pele Pilsner appear with a "special kick to thrill you" - who knows with this crowd. "

Le Ble D'Or, Taipei

Le Ble D'Or Brewery

5F, No.20,Jingyeh 3rd Road (Miramar Store);
Taipei,

Taiwan

(02) 2175-3739

http://www.lebledor.com.tw/4.html

This is another great find by Alan Hutton.

Alan writes: "The Le Ble D'Or Brewery can be found inside the Miramar shopping mall in downtown Taipei. Due to strict laws in Taiwan, however, alcohol cannot be consumed in the same place as it is brewed so every day they truck the beer into this fake Bavarian beer hall from Sanchong City on the outskirts of Taipei."

"Nevertheless, the so called brewery itself is located in a cavernous beer hall under the shopping mall and kitted out with authentic (but no longer in service ) copper brew kettles and numerous wooden kegs," adds Alan.

"The beer is 100% malt based and comes in three classic flavours; namely, the lager beer, the dunkel beer and the hefe-weizen beer. I should point out that all have the same alcohol by volume of 5% which goes against the grain of traditional stronger German beers of the same ilk," continues Alan.

"The lager is brewed with French malt and German Hallertau hops to give a golden smooth finish which tastes very good," writes Alan, "the dunkel beer is made using chocolate roasted malt and is relatively bitter sweet as a dark beer should be. The hefe-weizen uses Bavarian wheat malt grain to give it that cloudy effect and is again smooth on the palate. Beers are normally served in half pint glasses but for those with a thirst you can always order a 2 liter glass. They also serve the beer in "penguin shaped" black and white flasks which hold about 3.5 litres and are ideal if you don't want to keep finding the table staff for a refill every time the half pint glass is empty."

"The "German style" food served up is essentially finger food such as ribs, sausages, pork knuckles, chicken wings and beef marinated stews although there are other dishes available such as spicey gumbo/seafood with rice and seafood salads," says Alan, "entertainment was a keyboard player and a female singer which, to be brutally honest, did not do much for the ambience of the place. It was fake enough without adding more to it."

" The Miramar shopping mall is very easy to find since it's across the road from what used to be the tallest building in the world - the Taipei 101. Find 101 and you will find Le Ble D'Or brewery pub," says Alan.

This is another find by Alan Hutton.

Alan writes: "The Brew House micro-brewery can be found inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Shenzhen. It offers a very limited number of beers including Pilsner, Wheat & Dark ales. The dark beer is pretty palatable and is served in a stone beer mug similar to what you see in traditional German breweries. Atmosphere is pretty non-descript and many of the clients are visitors from overseas. Also on offer is a bottled beer collection from around the world. Overall, very much a micro, microbrewery but a welcome surprise if you don't want to drink San Miguel, Tiger or Tsingtao beers all the time while visiting Shenzhen."

The brewery's own site adds: 'The Brew House has an electric blue lighting theme outside with highlights of this blue taken inside too. There are 4 seating zones/ styles for the comfort of everyone - Formal seating at a table; Relaxing lounge seating in the "sung" on brightly colored sofas; Stools around the microbrewery bar; Stools and standing room outside in the urban beer garden. Enjoy our handcrafted beers under the stars on our über chic beer garden whilst listening to great music with friends. We also serve a full bar of other drinks and a snack menu.'

Alan Hutton writes: "The Mega CC Microbrewery and Pub is a unique establishment located in the bowels of the Lotte World Hotel in the Jamsil-dong area of Seoul. It's not just a small brewing pub either offering enough seating area to cover almost half the size of a football pitch. The brewed beers on tap include pils, weizen, dunkles and hite, of which, the latter I've yet to fully understand but I believe it is a "shandy" of some kind. The dunkles beer is actually more of a tan in colour and looks and tastes like a Tetley bitter with the one difference in that the glass is chilled before serving. Korean's that frequent the pub apparently expect their beers to be served in ice chilled glasses or stoneware steins. The most popular beers being served at the Mega CC today are the weizen for the Seoulite drinkers and the pilsner for those venturing in from the outskirts of the Busan region."

Alan adds: "It's well worth a visit to Mega CC when in Seoul given the very limited number of microbreweries's in the region and if you are not staying at the Lotte World Hotel then take the underground rail network to get there since the payment machines all accommodate English and it's way faster to travel than any taxi journey in the city. The underground rail network for Mega CC is on Line 2 at the Jamsil station."

David Manners writes: "Visited this outstanding establishment at the weekend (27/3/11). The Pelican Pale is an excellent hoppy little number, the staff are great, the seating arrangements are spacious and comfortable, there was a good crowd of happy-looking bunnies. All in all sitting in the sun drinking Pelican Pale is about as good as it gets."

Seabright's beers

'In addition to our regular brews, we have 3 to 8 other world-class beers available at any time,' says the brewery, 'check out our homepage for the latest seasonal selections, come on down to find out what they are, or call us at the brewery. Not sure what to order? Please ask your server for a free tester.'

Sample: $2.00 • 12oz: $4.00 • 16oz: $5.00 • Pitcher: $12.00

Pelican Pale

A smooth, medium-bodied, golden pale ale with a delicately balanced hop bitterness. Popular year 'round. Approx. 5% alc/vol.

Seabright Amber

Full bodies and deep copper-red in color, our amber ale has a rich malty aroma and flavor with an assertive hop character. Approx. 5% alc/vol.

Sacrilicious Ale

We desecrated traditional malty red ales by adding a sinful amount of Colombus Hops in the fermenter. The dark crystal malts balance out the pungent nose on this beer. The vatican did not approve of this recipe, but we're reaching for a higher power... YOU!!! Approx. 6.8% alc/vol.

The Blur

This beer is a traditional filtered Pacific Northwest India Pale Ale. Although golden in color, this is not a light beer. With more than 60 bitterness units it's got a bite to it, but is well balanced by the sweetness of a 7.4% alcohol by volume brew. This a is a very aggressive tasting beer. Approx. 7.4% alc/vol.

Oatmeal Stout

Smooth, creamy and mildy sweet with hints of chocolate and coffee flavors. GABF gold medal winner 1992, 1993, 1995; silver medal winner 1997, 2006. Approx. 6% alc/vol.

Seasonal Beers

Double Ryed I.P.A.

Twice the Rye, twice the fun! A lot of hops and a lot of malted rye went into this batch of beer. The rye dries out the body of this copper colored brew to let the hops shine thru. Cascade hops added to the fermentor give this beer a citrus aroma. Approx. 8.0% alc/vol.

Plum Crazy Wheat

We added 50 lbs of fresh plums to the fermentor to give this unfiltered wheat beer a little something extra. The German Perle hops give a hint of bitterness to balance out the sweetness of the fruit. One would have to be crazy not to enjoy this brew on a nice sunny Santa Cruz day ... Approx. 6.0% alc/vol.

Say Hey Wheat

The boys of summer ar back, so we released a nice filtered wheat beer. Amarillo hops give this beer a citrus nose to the finish. So grab a pint, watch nine innings with friends, and enjoy. (Note: there are no human growth hormones in this beer!) Approx. 4.8% alc/vol.

Alan Hutton writes: "On a recent trip to Bangalore I was alerted to the fact that in a liberal move, the local Excise Department have come out with a new policy called "Micro Brewery" where they will permit clubs, bars and restaurants to brew their own beer."

"This move is set to infuse competition to produce the best quality of beer, provide more choice and take on brewing giants such as Kingfisher," says Alan, "sadly, at this point in time there are only start-up's experimenting around the Bangalore area but in Pune it's already well established with the 1st Brew House Pub located inside the Corinthians Boutique Hotel and resembling an old English pub ambiance with full view of the copper brewing tanks."

"Offering a staggering 2000 brew varieties, this Brew Pub can seat up to 350 beer drinkers and offers a food menu spanning Greek, Asian and Mediterranean cuisines," continues Alan, "the all-malt barley/wheat/rye brewed beers to quote the bar owners "superior in taste, aesthetic and full of aromas."

Alan adds: "According to a leading financial daily in Bangalore, beer consumption has increased over the years with the Kingfisher brand of beers claiming it's market share touched 50% during the second half of 2010. They are now expecting an industry growth of 15-18% in the next 2 years."

"I guess we can expect a lot more to come from micro breweries across India in the coming years and as their electronic end-equipment industry continues to grow it can only be good news for beer loving semiconductor folks travelling into this emerging region!" concludes Alan.

The web-site has an alluring description of The Corinthian's  glories: 'Who says that palaces and the royal life are a part of the past?  Surely not those whom we have had the pleasure of serving at The Corinthians, Pune. Built to the lavish standards of a Moroccan fairy tale palace with elements of Egyptian influences, it offers you a grandiose setting.'

This is another of Alan Hutton's distinguished contributions:

"Who would have thought that back in 1985 a disused tyre re-treading plant in downtown Toronto would become a microbrewery! " writes Alan, "this is exactly how the Amsterdam Brewing Company was established thanks to Dutchman Roel Bramer and since then it has gone on to become one of Toronto's largest microbrewery's offering up fine ales and lagers."

"Today, they can be found in downtown Toronto at 21 Bathurst Street and my personal favourites are the Tilted Kilt Scotch Ale coming in at 6.5% and not unlike a "pint of heavy" from back in Glasgow with a ruby red colour all-be-it much stronger in alcohol/volume. "

"I also enjoyed the Oktoberfest lager at 6% and reminiscent of a good pint of helles during the Oktoberfest in Munich," adds Alan, "lastly, the Two Fisted Stout at 4.3% is also another quality dark beer which although a far cry from a pint of Guinness, it is still very creamy with a good long lasting pale white head and goes down just as well. One place to definitely stop by on any trip into downtown Toronto."

Thanks to Alan Hutton for this one.

Alan writes:"On entering a restaurant in Sao Paulo the other week, I spotted a glass of Guinness being poured from a bottle at the bar. Having a thirst, I decided to ask for one too ! However, to my surprise it was no Guinness but a bottle of Xingu beer from Brazil. Xingu beer (pronounced "shin-goo") looks very like Guinness or even a Sweetheart Stout but it's certainly not after one sip ! It's a very dark brown colour, almost black and when poured has a small tanny foam that quickly receeds. The smell is a bit of hops mixed in with a plum aroma for good measure. A slight aftertaste of licorice is also present. It is relatively light bodied and not too fizzy either so easy to drink a few while watching the sun go down over the ocean in Rio de Janeiro's beachfront. Since Brazil microbreweries are all but bought up by the big brewing conglomerates these days (AmBev, Grupo Schincariol, Petropolis and Heineken), Xingu still stands out as a quality microbrew beer and get's it's name after a river in the Amazon rainforest. Nowadays, Xingu is exported to the US, Australia and the UK."

Alan adds: "The place to be and to find Xingu is in Bar 121 inside the Sheraton Rio Hotel (Avenida Niemeyer 121, Leblon, Rio de Janeiro) sitting with the view over the ocean."

However you can save yourself the price of a plane fare to Rio and about 24 hours of travelling time by buying Xingu from Tesco's.

Alan Hutton of Gennum, who found this little gem, writes: "Being Scottish I was immediately drawn to the William Wallace ale with a real malty taste but not overly loaded with alcohol compared to some of the others beers on offer. With a slight taste of smoky peat coming through it was an enjoyable start to an evening and did somewhat remind me of being back in Glasgow with a few notable differences - we were sitting outside, the sun was shining and the beer was damm expensive !. Other beers on tap include the Atlantic IPA, a light malt Été Belgian ale, the Norwegian Ellhorn, the German VesterWeisse (or wheat beer) and Schlager (Munich malt and Czech Saaz hops) , and the rather unusually named trio of James Brown, Cole Porter and Stevie Ray ales. Did not venture into the attached restaurant but the menu did look interesting with distinct overtures towards Italian cuisine. Definitely worth a visit for any beer lover and since it's located downtown just off the City Hall main square (Radhuspladsen) it is very easy to find.

BrewPub København is an innovative microbrewery with own restaurant and bar, in the heart of Copenhagen.

The pub's site reads: 'We are situated in a historic 17th century building just off the main square (Rådhuspladsen). Our beer garden in the brewery courtyard provides atmospheric surroundings for a relaxing beer in the summer months. Brewery tours can be arranged.

Alan Hutton of Gennum sent this one in, for which many thanks, and this is what he has to say about it:

"Established in the foothills of Beaverton, Oregon back in 1990, the Oak Hills Brewery is quite unique. When most eating and drinking establishments value seating and tables as prime real estate, Oak Hills dedicate 40% of their location to beer keg storage and fermenters. Locally brewed beers include the signature Hammerhead ale which is very hoppy, the coal black Terminator stout, the IPA with its citrus flavour and the strangely named Bagdad ale which is recommended to be served in "hot weather". The Oak Hill churns out around 2000 kegs a year or around 250k (US) pints. Oak Hills also has the dubious distinction of producing one of the worst beers ever served ! Known as the Afterburner, it is a highly hopped ale infused with a high concentration of garlic. Not everyones best friend when it comes to drinking beer......Oak Hills is a WiFi hotspot but curiously they have a warning on the entrance to be 'considerate of other guests when using cells phones'. "

This is the on-site blurb:

'Sit in comfortable indoor booths and tables or at picnic tables outside in nice weather. But if you do sit inside, you'll no doubt want to join our regulars who love watching the active onsite brewery through the big interior windows.

Oak Hills Brewpub's "Captain Neon's Fermentation Chamber" features one of the most colorful McMenamins brewery experiences, thanks to the beautifully painted fermentation tanks.'

This is the on-site description of the beers they brew:

Terminator Stout
Black as the darkest night. Rich as the most decadent dessert, Terminator is for the true stout lover. This is a full bodied and flavor packed ale which draws it's robust complexity from kiln-baked specialty grains. Look for a wide array of toasted, chocolate, nutty and coffee-like flavors in every pint! The devoted swear by it, and it remains one of our top selling ales year after year.

Hammerhead
A classic Northwest pale ale and McMenamins top selling beer. This rich chestnut colored gem is a model of harmony between hops and malted barley. Hammerhead's signature Cascade hop nose and intense hopped flavor blend nicely with the caramel tones from the crystal malt. This beer has a vocal following. To run out is an unforgivable sin.

Ruby
In 1985 McMenamins became the first brewery in the U.S.A. to legally use fruit in ales. While many other breweries have followed suit, we still make this Ruby exactly as we first did: Light, crisp and refreshingly fruity. Over 55 pounds of hand-macerated, fresh, whole raspberries are used in every batch. Taste the original!

Black Rabbit Porter
Black Rabbit Porter is a semi-sweet ale with a roasty chocolate malt tone. This ale is defined by it's toasted nut flavor and a sweeter, softer finish than Terminator. Named after the elusive Black Rabbit who roams freely on the grounds at the Edgefield Manor, this ale has been an Edgefield staple for years.

Edgefield Wheat
Edgefield Wheat is a classic example of an American wheat ale. Unlike the popular Northwest Hefeweizen, Edgefield Wheat is a bright, clear, clean tasting ale. The smooth flavor of wheat malt is highlighted and has become a favorite of light ale drinkers.

"The Mermaid in Tokyo (2 min by foot from Akasaka-Mitsuke metro station) is an excellent pub with Guiness, Spitfire, Hoegaarden, Kirin Ichiban and another four on tap, numerous bottled choices as well as a couple of ciders.  Food is not especially outstanding but the most important thing is the atmosphere which is like a real pub in the middle of Tokyo - hard to pull off but they do.  Live sports, mishmash of tables and chairs, stale beer smell - GREAT!  Always a curious mix of expats and locals.  Exit the Akasaka- Mitsuke Metro stop to the narrow street in the entertainment sector, and turn left (heading away from the Hew Otani Hotel.)  A couple of short blocks on the right and you are there, it is on the corner ground floor of the Hotel Granbell."

Thanks very much indeed to Alan Hutton for this one.

Alan says: "Tegernsee beer is quite possibly one of southern Germany's (Bavaria) best kept secrets. Close enough to Munich, the Tegernsee Brauhaus dates back to a Benedictine Abbey in 746 where the monks indulged in their favourite pastime of brewing beer and drinking it themselves until 1803 when a royal takeover opened the doors for local Bavarians to sample their wares. "

"The cavernous beer hall is usually full and vibrant with local conversation and the food although limited in choice is reasonably priced", adds Alan, "if you like crispy roasted pork knuckle or roasted "Bierbratl" (pork belly) straight from the oven with a potato and cucumber salad then this is the place to be drinking great beer. Rarely seen outside of the Bavaria region and never exported outside of Germany this is one jewel in the crown of small breweries in southern Germany."
