Goldman's, Mobiles and The Nag's Head

The world may see Goldman’s bonuses as the epitome of capitalism, but earlier this week a bit of capitalism British-style warmed the cockles of the heart.

In an archetypal British pub, The Nag’s Head in Kinnerton Street in the heart of the UK’s poshest residential area, Belgravia, there is a handwritten sign saying: ‘No mobile phones. Thank you.’

A couple of evenings ago, a superior-looking type pulled out a mobile and began a conversation. Suddenly he noticed the landlady pointing at him. The finger moved to point at the door.

Like a lamb he left, never to return, laving a large glass of good wine behind.

The Nag’s Head, a genuine free house, makes and enforces its own rules. It’s run by an owner/manager who lives by the rules of common sense.

Pity these rules aren’t applied on trains, planes, pubs, restaurants and in public rooms everywhere.
