Skype, HD-TV and the Internet

The news that Skype's founders will soon launch a global 'near-HD' standard TV service over the Internet proves the point made in last week's piece HD TV over Internet that it's the newcomers to a market who see most of the game.

It's the fresh eye which is seeing the opportunity to take advantage of HD TV before the incumbent broadcasters get round to making it regularly available.

With Skype’s co-founders now moving into a global Internet TV service, it shows that it takes an outsider to appreciate the potential of technology. when incumbent players never seem to quite get it.

With part of the proceeds gained from selling Skype to E-bay for £1.3bn last year, Skype’s co-founders, Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, are said to be about to launch a ‘near-HD’ quality TV service.

Just as the incumbent telecommunications companies were the ones which put up the most die-hard resistance to the introduction of the broadband Internet, it is now the incumbent TV operators who are going to be trailing in HD TV.

It must be down to the corporate mentality.
