When the spot price of NAND flash is running at about $8 a gigabyte it's a bit cheeky of Fujitsu to offer a solid state version of its Lifebook laptop for $1,300 more than the HDD version.
That's for 32Gbytes. If you take the 16Gbyte SSD it's $600 - nearly 5X more for the drive than the price of its constituent flash.
Now I love the Fujitsu Lifebook. I bought one last year and it's the nicest piece of electronic kit I've ever set hands on.
But it cost about $1,500. To pay the same again to have the SSD version instead of the HDD version is absurd.
Come on Fujitsu. You can do better than this. Especially if Apple, Samsung, Tosh and the rest come up, as expected, with SSD-based laptops later this year.
It's good to see the industry coming round (again) to the idea of aptop computers with solid state main memory.
So far, it's been like Dr Johnson's description of women preachers: "It's like a dog walking on its hind- legs, it's not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all".
