Interesting to hear Sprint say that its multi-billion dollar investment in Wimax in North America is being driven by user-generated content.
All those years and dollars spent in the content development departments of the cellular network operators seem to have been spent in vain.
Although, if they had looked over to DoCoMo of Japan, the operators would have twigged that user generated content was the way ahead, because DoCoMo allowed almost anyone to put up content on its network, and would share revenues with tens of thousands of independent content providers.
Instead of following DoCoMo, Western operators plodded on with developing 'location-based services' which seem to have turned out to be largely unwanted, and have wrestled with ways of getting some adult content into their offerings without falling foul of the law or being pilloried by the Press.
All the operators needed to do was to provide a decent network and leave the content to their customers.
After all that's what they did when the networks were voice-only. And in those days they had a fast-growth business.
