If the process of turning a standard product into one suitable for the embedded market takes the same time as usual, then AMD’s first four-core microprocessor, Barcelona, should be available for embedded applications in March 2008.
Barcelona was announced last month and, according to Jeff Chu, AMD’s marketing manager at AMD’s embedded computing solutions division, “For standard products it’s usually six months before they’re able to be released into embedded markets.”
Asked which of the embedded market segments Barcelona would initially be used for, Chu replied “Telecommunications and storage will be the areas initially interested in Barcelona, and also medical imaging.”
What does Barcelona deliver? "Instead of having two dual cores connected to the front side bus, you get four cores connected to the crossbar switch allowing data transfers at 24Gbps", replied Chu.
