The world seems obsessed by trends, be it markets, weather or behaviour. The great economist, Sir Alec Cairncross, Economic Adviser to the British Government in the 1960s and Founder of the Economic Development Institute, had the final say on trends with his composition of the following beguiling little limerick

A trend is a trend is a trend,
But the question is, will it bend?
Will it alter its course
Through some unforeseen force
And come to a premature end?"
