Are the Brits suckers? Today we find out. The iPhone hits stores at 6:02pm tonight. Who will pay £899 to buy and use an iPhone for a year?
That’s the total cost of the phone, at £269 (£80 more than the US price of $399 or £191), plus the exorbitant £35 a month being charged by network operator O2 for a minimum one year contract.
Now the iPhone’s a lovely thing. It feels good. It has stunning sensor technology and a great screen. For the first time, on seeing an iPhone, it seemed to me that TV-to-the-handset might be a viable proposition. Simply because of the size and quality of the display.
If you don’t buy the phone from O2, and just get one from Apple, you don’t have to pay for the service charge. But you have to be confident you can fiddle around with an unlocking programme.
And what connectivity do you get for your £899? Well you don’t get 3G. You do get Edge, but Edge covers only about a third of the UK. You get WiFi, where you can get Wifi.
So, how big a sucker is the average Brit?
Today we find out.

Dear Veijo,
No, no one sent me a free iPhone, but I'm not bitter and twisted, this deal is a rip-off, big-time,
Cheers
David
P.S. Hope you're enjoying your free iPhone

David,
the policy of our publishing house strictly forbids us to take any gifts over 2 euros. A free iPhone would be totally of the charts :)

My dear Veijo,
I have seen you scoffing freebie dinners worth considerably more than two euros.
And how about the annual Linear Tech T-Shirt? I bet that costs more than two euros.
And who sets this absurd two euro policy of your publishing house?
Is it be you?
Best wishes
David

Well, luckily there are exceptions to our policy: beer, beef and Linear t-shirts.
And my official view on the policy makers of our company is that they are thougthful, caring, happy and considerate people.
