‘With Britain’s proposed entry into the EC just over a month away, Plessey has strengthened its European regional organisation in readiness for an expansion of trade’, reported Electronics Weekly in its November 29 1972 edition.
At the time, Plessey had 6,000 employees in Continental Europe with manufacturing plants in Portugal, Malta, Italy and Belgium, and had foreign acquisitions with manufacturing facilities in Holland, Germany, France, Sweden and Switzerland.
In preparation for entry into the EEC, Plessey reviewed its European priorities, coming up with the following list: radio communications; marine products; avionics; record-players (Garrard); ground and meteorological radar systems; facsimile and data transmission equipment; optical character recognition systems; numerical and airfield lighting; water circulating pumps for domestic central heating; hydraulic components and systems for tractors and earth moving equipment.
