Sir Robin Saxby, first CEO of ARM, reckons that interviewing new recruits for the company was one of the most important tasks he had to master.
"It's a valuable skill to know who you can work with and who you can't”, says Saxby, “one thing that helps is being very direct. If you're not being straight with me while I'm being straight with you - and you carry on not being straight - that sends some pretty negative signals to me."
"A certain type of person will come into the room, take charge, make a lot of noise", says Saxby, "a lot of people in business are like that - ego-centric, with a high opinion of themselves".
"I look for honesty and integrity”, adds Saxby, “I look to see if they listen as well as talk. Some people appear to be listening and don't hear a word. Some people appear to be talking but they're not saying a lot."
"When people come for interviews I ask everyone what they think", says Saxby, adding, "some people will come in and be rude to reception."
He asks himself two key questions about a potential recruit:
'Do they fit in?' and
'Do they add value?'
