Suckers' Phone Flops - Kewney Gets The Figures

The Suckers’ Phone, a.k.a the original 3G-less iPhone, was a total flop in Europe, according to the blog of Guy Kewney.

Quoting ‘sources available to French publication Les Echoes', licensed Andalucian goat-herder, Guy Kewney, writes that Orange "has sold only 100,000 units since the November launch, while at the end of January T-Mobile sold 70,000 iPhones in Germany. In UK, Telefonica’s O2 managed to sell 200,000 units."

Everyone knew the iPhone had done badly in Europe, particularly as none of the local vendors, nor Apple, would produce sales figures.

In not doing so, Apple damaged its credibility. It would have been a lot better to have made a clean breast of the figures, and said ‘OK we charged too much’ (a package costing £900 in the UK for an 18 month contract) and ‘we should have put 3G in’.

But Apple didn’t. It just kept quiet.

Well better luck with the 3G version, Apple. The iPhone’s a lovely thing, but we’re a sophisticated wireless market over on this side of the pond.

We had a guy called Marconi over here, when over there they were still chasing Red Indians around with bows and arrows.

So don’t try and treat us like suckers.

Again.
