SGS To Double UK IC Production

Microcircuit production at SGS' Falkirk factory will be approaching the level of half-a-million units a month by the end of this year, and plans are now being finalised to bring this capability up to around one million units a month by the end of the year.

So starts a story in Electronics Weekly's edition of September 24 1969.

'Diffusion capacity has recently increased to 28 furnaces', the story continues, 'this capacity is likely to be doubled over the next 18 months.'

"This move will coincide with the start with the start of a three year development plan for the laboratories (at Aylesbury and Falkirk) which will strengthen significantly our device development capability in Great Britain, particularly in the area of custom-designed ICs", said Larry Curry, General Manager of SGS UK.

The company is looking to the local Scottish universities for graduates for the laboratories, continues the story.

Dr Jeremy Bray. Parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of Technology, said: "While we are not yet member of the EEC, by the growth of European firms operating in this as in other countries, we are building a sound basis for our membership."

N.B. French President General Charles de Gaulle had, in 1963 and 1967, vetoed two UK applications to join the EEC, forerunner of the EU. It was not until 1973 that the UK joined up with Europe.
