Machines Taking Over? Don't Believe It.

Every now and again a scientist comes up with the notion that humans are going to get taken over by machines.

Intel's CTO, Justin Rattner said, at this week's Intel Developer Forum: "There is speculation that we may be approaching an inflection point where the rate of technology advancements is accelerating at an exponential rate, and machines could even overtake humans in their ability to reason, in the not so distant future."

Eight years ago, Bill Joy, co-founder and chief scientist of Sun Microsystems, warned of the dangers society faces from becoming over dependent on a new generation of robotic machines.

Personally, I prefer another view. At a lunch in London some years back, I asked Gordon Moore, co-founder and former CEO of Intel, about these machines-taking-over predictions.

"If we can't figure out how to keep ahead of computers",  replied Moore, "we deserve to get taken over by them."

Well, people do differ. I know people whose reason will never be overtaken by machines. And I´ve met people who have already been overtaken by digital scales.

Maybe Mr Rattner is referring to the average American?

I think here in the UK, and over there in Finland, we'll be safe.

But Intel's management should probably be worried.
