Minicomputers To be Investigated By UK Government

"Minicomputers - the latest section of the electronics industry to succumb to the 'bandwagon effect' - are to be put under the microscope by the Ministry of Technology, writes Steve Liebmann."

So starts the front page lead story in Electronic Weekly's issue of January 28th 1970.

The EW story continues: "They have commissioned a computer consultancy firm to conduct a major survey of the present and future uses of small and minicomputers, so that resources can be channelled into the area that will be most beneficial to the needs of industry".

"The need for this type of survey has become very apparent over the last few months as more and more manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon", continues the story.

"Minicomputers are now being marketed in Britain by some 10 manufacturers - all of whom are very optimistic about the market and their share of it," says the story.

"The basic prices vary from quotes of £1,700 for Ferranti's Argus 600 up to £4,900 for Raytheon's 704", continues the report, "while these very low basic prices are impressive, the peripherals necessary to actually use the machines will often multiply the  basic cost several times."

THIS TIME TOMORROW STARTS A NEW SERIES: - FABLES

(Fables are described by Wikipedia as 'one of the most enduring forms of folk literature'. Each one has a moral.)
