The Chief Bollox Officer

Clearly there is a need for a new type of 'C' class officer in technology companies alongside the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer, The Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Information Officer and the Chief Marketing Officer.

At company shindigs there is often a session where wacky predictions are given about the progress of technology. Things like machines taking over from humans, programmable micro-robots which can combine to take on different forms, wireless power transmission, that sort of thing.

These sessions are designed for one purpose only: to generate press coverage. Journos love this kind of stuff because they can usually get space for it in their publications. Editors back in the office will check it for sensation value, and usually find a slot for it.

Now the guy who gets saddled with having to make these kind of presentations is almost always the Chief Technology Officer. The title gives reassuring credibility to the predictions.

But it always seems to me to be demeaning for a guy who is a sufficiently good scientist to make it to the position of CTO, to be forced into making these kind of populist predictions which, more often than not, turn out to be nonsense.

So, to protect the CTO's reputation and self-esteem, we need a new C class of exec to give this type of presentation:

The Chief Bollox Officer.
