There was once a great chip company which invented a new product category, semi-custom, and dominated the market for it for a decade.
But two technological advances came along to transform the area: MOS was taking over from bipolar, and computer aided design was taking over from hand-crafted design.
The chip company's management took no notice of the two advances and, within a decade, the company had lost nearly all its market share, and got taken over.
