Burying The Hatchet

A notable feature of the recent American election campaign was the grace of the speeches by the defeated candidates, and one wonders if this is something inherited from the Red Indians.

Governor Mitt Romney made the best speech of his campaign for the Republican nomination when he announced he was pulling out of the race.

Senator Hillary Clinton made a stirring and gracious speech when she 'suspended' her campaign for the Democratic nomination.

Senator John McCain made a surprisingly warm and generous speech when he conceded the election to Senator Barack Obama.

When the Red Indians turned up to a peace pow-wow the chiefs followed a tradition of ceremonially burying their hatchets.

This gave rise to the term burying the hatchet when differences are settled and, maybe, to a graceful tradition in the US political system.
