Cellphone Market A Spotty Pot

How very wise that remark of Linear Tech's CEO Bob Swanson was when he said last year: "There's no pot of gold at the end of the cellphone rainbow, just a lot of red ink."

Sony Ericsson has come up with a truly horrible 261 million euro Q4 loss blaming a 'deterioration' in demand for cellphones. In Q407 the company made a profit of 1.1 billion euros.

That's one heck of a deterioration! It represents a drop in cellphone sales revenue from 3.8 billion euros in Q407 to 2.9 billion euros in Q408.

While poor old Motorola said it sold 19 million cellphones in Q408, compared with 25.4 million in Q308, and 28 million in Q2 and would lay off 3,000 people in the handset business

28 - 25 - 19 - ....?

Nokia and Samsung nonetheless lumber on while those sleek little runners Blackberry and Apple keep nibbling away at the pie.

So there's a pot of something out there, but it's a very spotty pot.
