There was once a company which aimed to exploit the simultaneous emergence of two complementary new technologies - silicon compilers and direct write e-beam machines.
.
It would, it was envisaged, be a case of putting the net-list in one end and getting a chip out the other.
The company attracted some heavyweight investors including BAe and Philips.
But neither the compiler, not the direct writ e-beam machine, ever really worked properly.
