FABLE: Don't Send A Fool On A Delicate Mission

Over forty years ago, one of the great British electronics majors was in talks with one of America's top ten semiconductor companies about merging their semiconductor operations.

Arrangements had been pretty much finalised when the British company asked if they could send over a four man team to meet the US company's top executives.

The first meeting was arranged for a Friday night which miffed some of the US execs who wanted to get away for the weekend. However the US CEO and three top US execs met up with the four Brits for dinner.

At the dinner one of the British execs asked: "Tell me, what exactly is a semiconductor?"

The US CEO and two of his execs got up and left the table, leaving just one US guy to see out the evening.

The merger was called off which was a pity for the UK company because the US company is still one of the top ten US semiconductor companies.

The UK company doesn't exist any more.

MORAL Don't send a fool on a delicate mission..

I know UK top executive have a reputation for dimness, but - please, please tell me this didn't really happen. It is a joke, isn't it?
