Ed The Serial CEO Meets The Press.

This is the third entry selected from the diary of Edward Rushbridger, (a nom de plume to protect the author) which fell into my hands recently. Previous entries can be found here and here. Ed is the type of CEO who goes from company to company at the behest of venture capitalists or private equity backers.

'Today was set aside for press interviews', writes Ed, 'I thought this would be a doddle because the press are no-nothing riff-raff and, although I'm still in the learning stage about this company, I should know enough about it to see them off.'

'The first few interviews were all from the big business media players, the Wall Street Journal, the FT, Bloomberg, the Nikkei, Die Welt, Figaro etc. They mostly asked financial questions which were pretty easy to bat away. When they got onto our products I knew much more than them, thanks to the briefings from our General Managers, so I did pretty well, though I say it myself."

'If we'd stopped there, everything would have been fine. But our PR man had, God rot him, included some interviews with the specialist press.'

'One of these reptiles asked me which companies I admired in the wireless space which is one of our businesses. "Qualcomm, TI . . . ," I started off.'

"Any other smaller players", asked the reptile'.

'I wracked my brains, then came up with the name of a company which a mate of mine ran.'

"They filed for Chapter 11 earlier this week", said the reptile.

'Oh God I know the little shit will make a meal of that and give everyone a laugh. That b. PR man's got it coming.'

'Still, only 424 days to go till we IPO and I'm out of here with a massive chunk of change.'
